NORTH WILDWOOD – A centennial remembrance in honor of the historic Irish rebellion of 1916 will be held on April 30, 2016, at the Hunger Strikers Memorial located at First and New Jersey Avenues, North Wildwood, NJ at 1 PM.

The Easter Rising began on Easter Monday, 1916 and ended April 30, 1916. Although Ireland’s Easter Rising of 1916 lasted only six days, the lives of many men and women were at risk before, during and long after this insurrection. The Irish Volunteers seized key locations in Dublin with the proud and brave “Cumann na mBan”, or Women’s League armed and fighting at their sides, to proclaim an Irish Republic at a time when Great Britain was distracted by World War I. Although almost 500 people were killed in the Rising and more than 2,500 were wounded, these rebels forged the path to Irish freedom and introduced a novel idea to the world: equality for women. They did not “go gentle into that good night,” but rather roared with the pride of lions…together.

Please join us to remember those who fought and died so that Ireland could be a Nation Once Again. The ceremony will include guest speakers, a reading of the Irish Proclamation, along with readings from several award winning essays written by Cape May County students on the topic of the Easter Rising, and the raising of the Flag of Ireland.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Cape May County, Division 1, the Anglesea Irish Society, the Anglesea Pub, the Cape May County Emerald Society and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Cape May County, Division 1, are proud and honored to present this event and would like to acknowledge and thank Mayor Patrick Rosenello, City Council and the City of North Wildwood for their gratitude and support.

All are welcome to attend.
