North Wildwood’s 2013 Season of Sizzle Starts Now!

From sporting events, to parades, to festivals and fireworks-we have a full schedule of exciting things to do this season.

First on the list is our famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade, held Saturday, March 16 right in the middle of Irish-American Heritage Month!

The Parade steps off at noon following an 11:30 a.m. ceremony at City Hall where Mayor Bill Henfey will address the crowd, along with other dignitaries including Fr. Joseph Wallace of Notre Dame de la Mer Parish.

The Parade will feature plenty of Pipes and Drums, Color Guards, and high school bands.

All the local Irish groups will be represented. In fact, the three Grand Marshals are: LAOH President Pat Monaghan, the Emerald Society Associate Delegate Peg McQuaid, and Anglesea Irish Society Jodi DiEduardo.

They’ll leave City Hall and proceed north on Atlantic Avenue to Olde New Jersey Avenue.

Then at noon on Saturday, March 23, come to the Island of Flags in front of the Rec Center, 9th and Central avenues where the Greek flag will be ceremoniously raised in honor of Greek Independence Day. If you have questions, please call 609-602-0056.

On Sunday, March 24, hundreds will participate in a 26.2 mile road race that begins in Cape May City at 9 a.m. and runs through our City. It’s the Ocean Drive Marathon and it benefits non-profit organizations that serve Cape May County. Call 609-523-0880 for info.

Easter weekend brings three important events to our City. First is the Elks Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 30. It’s sponsored by the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge 1896. Animal Alliance of Cape May County Inc. Launches “Project Catsnip”at MASH (Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospital) in the Wildwoods

American Legion Post #184 to Serve as Site for Spay/Neuter Surgeries

Wildwood, NJ, February 8, 2013 – The Animal Alliance of Cape May County Inc. (AACMC), with cooperation of American Legion Post#184, as host for the site, has come up with an innovative way to get the Wildwoods’ free roaming, indoor/outdoor and stray cats sterilized, thus humanely managing cat populations in their communities. AACMC will take spay/neuter surgeries on the road by launching a MASH (Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospital) clinic at the American Legion Hall Post#184, 4200 Atlantic Ave(corner of Roberts & Atlantic Aves) Wildwood NJ on Sunday, March 3, 2013 thanks to a $22,000 grant from PetSmart Charities®(www.PetSmartCharities.org).  A team of veterinary technicians, seasoned volunteers and a licensed veterinarian experienced in high volume spay/neuter will set up the clinic.  The surgeries, which include a rabies vacccination, are free for those caring for free roaming/stray cats in the 08260 zip code.  The fee for indoor pet cats and stray/free roaming cats for ALL other municipalities is a very reasonable $55.  Appointments are required for all cats. Since 2005 the experienced team at AACMC has altered approximately 15,000 cats.

“If someone can’t afford to get their cat sterilized, chances are they may not have the transportation resources to get them to the clinic either, even on free sterilization days,” says Lewis Vinci, President of AACMC. “Through a MASH clinic, we’re hoping to reach people caring for stray and free roaming cats that might have transportation issues and provide them with high-quality services, including licensed veterinarians, great patient care and pain medication. The clinic being held on a weekend day makes this even more convenient as we typically hold clinics every Thursday in Cape May Court House.  This is a really good offer and one that will end when the grant monies run out.”

MASH clinics have become popular throughout the United States as organizations look for more innovative ways to reach animals in need of spay/neuter services. All free roaming/stray felines are recommended to have a small tip of their left ear surgically cut/removed during their spay/neuter surgery and while under general anesthesia to indicate they have been sterilized.

For appointments and other information, contact AACMC through its website at www.AnimalAlliancecmc.org or call 609-465-6388.

AACMC is an all-volunteer animal welfare organization founded in 2003 with the mission to find solutions to the overpopulation of unwanted companion animals through education and financial support of low-cost spay/neuter programs.  For more information on the programs and activities provided by AACMC, visit their website at www.AnimalAlliancecmc.org or call 609-465-6388.

JANUARY 30 DEADLINE FOR NEW JERSEYANS TO RETURN SBA DISASTER LOAN APPLICATION, REGISTER FOR ASSISTANCE NOW LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY

Survivors of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey have less than two weeks to register for disaster assistance and to return their applications for low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration.

The quickest way to apply for an SBA disaster home or business loan is filling out an online application athttps://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Ways to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency:

  • Online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov
  • Via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov
  • Call the 24-hour numbers 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585
  • For 711-Relay or Video Relay Services (VRS) call 800-621-3362
  • A FEMA Language Assistance Line is available for those who need interpretation services in languages other than English or Spanish. Call: 866-333-1796.

Survivors must register or return the loan application by the deadline in their state.

Deadline for New Jersey: Wednesday, Jan. 30, by midnight EST. ALL counties in NEW JERSEY are designated for individual assistance.

U.S. Small Business Administration

SBA is the primary source of federal funds for long-term rebuilding. In most cases, FEMA funds will not cover all of the repair needs of homeowners. Money for a temporary rental home is the form of help FEMA largely provides so obtaining a low-interest SBA disaster loan is a survivor’s best option for repairing their home and replacing property.

People can apply to SBA before settling with their insurance company-so there’s no need to wait.Applying by the deadline can avoid a shortfall in rebuilding money if survivors later discover they are underinsured.

By returning the SBA loan application, homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace their storm-damaged home.

Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $40,000 for replacement of personal property such as clothing, furniture, cars and appliances.

There is no obligation to accept an SBA disaster home loan and homeowners and renters may become eligible for additional FEMA grants if they are not approved for a loan.

For businesses and private nonprofit organizations, the SBA may loan up to $2 million to repair or replace storm-damaged property.

For additional information on SBA, contact the customer service center by calling 800-659-2955 (for people who are deaf or hard of hearing TTY 800-877-8339), emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov or visitingsba.gov.

FEMA may be able to help with disaster-related costs that are not covered by insurance. Survivors in designated counties are encouraged to apply for possible grant assistance for temporary housing, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. People who have sustained a loss due to Hurricane Sandy should register even if they have insurance.

Affected survivors may visit a disaster recovery center for more information about FEMA and SBA assistance. For nearby locations, visit www.fema.gov/disaster-recovery-centers.

FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

Recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status. If you or someone you know has been discriminated against, call FEMA toll-free at 800-621-FEMA (3362). For TTY call 800-462-7585.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

Hurricane Sandy damages Third Ave. GazeboGazebo Update
The project to repair and reinforce the damage Sandy did to the area
from 2nd to 4th streets along JFK Blvd. is ongoing. The weather has hampered
progress a little, but we are still moving forward.

The big buzz is: Will the GAZEBO be replaced at 3rd and JFK? This
question is answered with a resounding Yes. We along with the Mayor and
Council are looking at the best design to fit that area and also stand up to
future storms.

The grant money will be used to rehabilitate 17 homes of low- or moderate-income families.

North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey said, “City Council and I have been taking many initiatives to secure funds for improving our City during this difficult economic time. We’re very pleased that our efforts resulted in receiving this award, which will certainly be put to good use.”
