North Wildwood, NJ – On Thursday, June 11th, 2015, Chief Tony Cavalier of North Wildwood Beach Patrol attended the Mid-Atlantic Rip Current and Surf Zone Safety Workshop at the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus. One of three beach patrol Chief’s from South Jersey that attended, Chief Cavalier was there to gather information that can contribute to the improvement of the techniques and protocols of water safety. Other beach patrol Chiefs in attendance from our local South Jersey area were, Bud Johnson of Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol and Buzz Mogck of Cape May City Beach Patrol.

Attendees were schooled on surf zone forecasts, beach hazards, decision support, technical information on rip currents and rip current validation, pilot projects, validation efforts and forecast models presented by NOAA/NWS, surf zone injuries, rip current initiatives and rip current communication. Presenter included the National Weather Service of Mt. Holly, NJ, NWS Wakefield, representative from Stevens Institute of Technology, members of the University of Delaware Sea Grant staff, and Beebe Healthcare.

“This is a great event and the first in a long time,” said Chief Tony Cavalier, NWBP. “It was a privilege to have collaborated with Chief Johnson and Mogck at the workshop, and I’m looking forward to applying what I have learned to this summer’s water safety efforts,” said Chief Cavalier.
